Auchinleck - Alive & KickingFestival

The first ever ‘Alive and Kicking’ Music and Arts Festival will take place at various venues in Auchinleck from the 6th to 8th August. A fantastic weekend of concerts and community activities has been lined up by the Auchinleck Community Development Initiative (A.C.D.I), and it promises to be a great event for local residents and visitors to the town to enjoy. The event kicks off in style on Friday 6th August with a concert featuring the Macdonald Brothers, ex-Bay City Roller, Eric Faulkner and the Simple Touch. On Saturday 7th August there will be a jammed packed day of entertainment with ‘free’ music concerts around town featuring talented local and regional artists; Bletherskyte, Joan Outram, The Hot Toddies and an array of Bluegrass, Country & Western, Traditional and Folk musicians. The day will also feature the official opening of the town’s Community Trim Trail, an Arts and Crafts exhibition (including a special gallery of children’s work), the Jackie Scarlett first round tie between Auchinleck Talbot and Cumnock Juniors, Funfair Rides and two showcase concerts featuring Skerryvore, Borealis and Bobby McCallum plus a youth based concert featuring the La Fontaines, the Symptoms and a DJ set from MILKY. The weekend event will reach a crescendo on Sunday 8th August with an Ecumenical Church service, the Auchinleck Gala Day at Beechwood Park (great range of family entertainment and ‘live’ sets from the Ghosties and Inde Code) and a festival finale concert- dinner/dance with Abbamania, David Burrows as Jon Bon Jovi and Sonix. Auchinleck was a key music destination for many fine acts during the 1960’s including; The Who, Jeff Beck, The Move, The Troggs, Tom Jones and even Pink Floyd! The halcyon days may be a distant memory but as A.C.D.I spokesperson Councillor Neil McGhee explained the town still has a bright future. Neil said “We hope that over the next few year’s we can recreate some of these golden moments with great performances from exciting local, national and international acts. The ethos of the A.C.D.I, is to promote the regeneration of Auchinleck and to do everything we can to shine a positive light on the good things the town has to offer, and in doing so attract many visitors to the area and help to boost the local economy”. This sentiment was echoed by Councillor Jim Roberts who said, “Auchinleck and the surrounding area has so much potential as far as tourism is concerned with Dumfries House, the Barony ‘A’ Frame and Auchinleck Estate all within a few miles. The ‘Alive and Kicking’ festival receives cross-party support and I would like to congratulate the A.C.D.I for their vision and determination to stage such a wonderful variety of events”. The organisers would like to thank all the local businesses and companies for their financial and in-kind support and give special thanks to the Cumnock and Doon Valley Minerals Trust (Main Sponsor), The Railway Hotel, Auchinleck Indoor and Outdoor Bowling Clubs, The Market Inn, The Boswell Arms, Auchinleck Talbot FC and the Darvel Music Company for managing the whole project. Tickets go on sale on the 7th of July and can be purchased at either the Railway Hotel or on-line via PayPal at www.auchinleckfestival.co.uk. Other contacts for tickets will soon be available – see website for further details.

Firewalk

Largs Viking Festival
Largs

www.ayrshirecs.org

Part of Sportember! Firewalking is the art of walking on hot coals, rocks or cinders without burning the soles of your feet. We would like you to join us for our forthcoming Firewalk in Largs. You will, after a motivational training session, walk across 20 feet of wood embers burning at 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit without experiencing any pain or injury at all! Firewalking is genuinely thrilling. Everybody finds their first Firewalk not only great fun but thoroughly exhilarating too. You will never forget it and you will be talking about it for a long time afterwards If you want an enjoyable, fun event, which is both ‘laugh out loud’ funny yet thought provoking, not to mention utterly different from anything you have seen before, then this is the event for you. In addition to raising funds, you will find the experience to be empowering, inspirational and horizon expanding to say the least! The effects of the motivational training session will have long lasting benefits in your personal life, with increased awareness of how to achieve your goals, an enhanced view of your potential to succeed and a general ability to recognize when fear is preventing you from moving forward in your life. After all - If you can walk on fire - What else can you achieve if you put your mind to it

THE BAD SHEPHERDS with ADRIAN EDMONDSON

Ayr Town Hall New Bridge Street
Ayr
KA7 1LX

Adrian Edmondson was a teenager when punk arrived. The songs of The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Jam and The Stranglers were the soundtrack to his life through the late 70’s and early 80’s, and like a lot of people of his generation he was fond of playing these songs to himself at home on his acoustic guitar. They've recently recorded an album, 'Yan, Tyan, Tethera, Methera!', which is out now - it was recorded 'as live' at the Blue Moon studios in Banbury. 'Yan, Tyan, Tethera, Methera' means 'One, Two, Three, Four' in an ancient Cumbrian dialect used almost exclusively by shepherds. Had the Ramones been Cumbrian shepherds, it's what they would have shouted as the intro to every song...

Holy Trinity Church Fullarton Street

When university cleaner Aleksander Kudajczyk put down his mop to play a few notes on a grand piano he thought no one would hear him. Had he known of the camera in the corner he would never have touched the instrument - and his talent would have remained undiscovered. But he has graduated from lowly cleaner to concert pianist after a spellbinding performance of Chopin compositions played to an empty room. The 28-year-old, who arrived in Britain in 2006, had considered himself lucky to land a job cleaning the university law department. He saw no need to mention the fact he had studied at one of Poland’s finest music academies. But the unwitting public performance so enraptured his on-line audience that he is now playing packed venues.

The following ten holes are parkland providing a varied challenge, this latter part has the added interest of the river, from which the town takes it’s name. Care should be taken on the 9th tee as this hole is named after the gentleman who stepped back to admire a good drive only to take an unscheduled dip in the River Girvan! If you score well on Girvan you have played very well indeed.

SPIRIT OF DJANGO with MARTIN TAYLOR

Ayr Town Hall New Bridge Street
Ayr
KA7 1LX

If you can imagine the ideal soundtrack to driving through the scented country roads of France on a hot lazy summer’s day then it would be the music of Martin Taylor’s Spirit of Django. To mark the 100th Anniversary of the birth of one of the founders of European jazz Django Reinhardt, Martin Taylor has reformed his award winning group Spirit of Django after a 15 year hiatus for the new album, ‘Last Train to Hauteville’. Martin Taylor first came to prominence in the ’70s through his work with violinist Stephane Grappelli and as such is able to trace his musical lineage back to Django Reinhardt and the original Quintette du Hot Club de France. In 1994 Martin formed Spirit of Django to re-explore his own Gypsy roots. Their first album reached No.1 in the UK Jazz Charts with their version of Robert Palmer’s ‘Johnny & Mary’ becoming familiar across Europe as the theme for the successful ‘Nicole-Papa’ TV adverts for Renault Clio.
