Robert Burns
Robert Burns was born in Alloway, Ayrshire on 25 January 1759. Although he lived a short life, dying at the age of 37, it was fulfilling and eventful. Starting out as a farmer then moving on to become a writer, Burns travelled throughout Scotland where he gathered inspiration for much of his work. The stunning Ayrshire scenery helped provide the insight for compiling much of his romantic material.
On the Sunday nearest 25th January every year, Ayrshire hosts ‘Alloway 1759’ an event where the village of Alloway is transported back to the year 1759 to commemorate and celebrate the birthplace and life of the Bard with activities taking place in and around Burns cottage In May of each year the annual ‘burns an’ a’ that’ Festival also takes place. This is the largest arts and cultural festival in the west of Scotland with an international profile.
