Whole in One - An exhibition of Open Golf

As the first ever round of The Open Golf Championship was played at Prestwick, Ayrshire almost 150 years ago, who would have thought that it would still stand today as one of the leading events in the world’s sporting calendar.

The competition may have changed over the years but golf continues to grow in popularity and The Open, as it is now known, will again this year return to Ayrshire, the home of Open golf.

To celebrate this, a special exhibition ‘Whole in One’ will take place in Maclaurin Galleries, Rozelle Park beginning Monday 1 June and running until Monday 31 August 2009.
This free exhibition truly is for everyone and will chart the history and the impact of Open golf in Scotland. The exhibition will feature interactive display, audio visual presentation and a wealth of golfing artefacts and memorabilia on display from major private clubs, as well as national and local collections. This will include a replica Open Championship Claret Jug and Challenge Belt amongst other items.

Exhibits will also cover the early development of golf, the design of courses and equipment, women in golf, golf tourism, famous players and personalities and even some golf fashion!

This is a very special free Homecoming exhibition for Ayrshire and a must see for golfers, families and summer visitors to Ayrshire. One very famous golfer, Jack Nicklaus said of the event

‘The Whole in One exhibition is all about memories and rekindling the spirit of the past. I would encourage everyone with an interest in sport, their local history or those who are plain curious to have a look at the development of golf in South Ayrshire and to see some of the exhibits on show.’
