Varyag Memorial

A one day event was dedicated to the 64th anniversary of victory over Fascism in the Second World War. Visitors joined the official ceremony to pay tribute to and remember the Russian cruiser Varyag whilst feasting on Russian food and being entertained by a Russian historical performance held at the Lendalfoot Community Hall.
It was the fourth time that flowers were laid at the Varyag monument. In 2006 a memorial tablet was placed on the Lendalfoot coast, In 2007 a bronze cross was unveiled at a spot near to where the ship sunk and in 2008 a group of people from the former Soviet Union established a tradition to pay respects to the legendary Russian ship each year on 9 May at a victory day of World War 2.
Made in USSR is a non profit organisation that unites Russian speaking people who live in the North East of England and others who are interested in the Russian culture, history and traditions and life behind the former Iron Curtain.
Alex Mironov, committee member of MADE IN USSR commented
'We are delighted to stage this event in Lendalfoot. There's very strong evidence that people from the North East of England and Scotland can benefit from opening their minds to seeing people from ex-Soviet bloc as very viable sources of culture and friendship.'
Alex Oattes, South Carrick Councillor added
'I am delighted this party of Russian people are returning to Lendalfoot to celebrate Russia's victory over Fascism, and who are also celebrating the bravery of the Varyag Crew in the Sino Russian War. I look forward to meeting our friends again and to share their entertainment and generous hospitality.'
